Wife Killer Gets Maximum Prison Term

prison_1A Conshohocken man who admitted beating and stomping his wife to death has been given 20 to 40 years in state prison. That’s the maximum punishment allowed under state law.  46-year-old Joseph Giongo pleaded guilty but mentally ill to a felony charge of third degree murder earlier this year.  A psychologist and psychiatrist testified in Montgomery County Court, saying he suffered from a major depressive disorder and psychosis when he killed his wife Bernadette, who was 42 at the time the incident occurred in December of 2007.  The beating started after the couple argued about a takeout food order.  Their seven-year-old son was watching, and when he tried to call for help his father pulled out the phone cord.  The boy and his mother’s relatives were in court for the sentencing Wednesday.  He will initially go to a state hospital for treatment, but he could be transferred to a prison later.
