DA: Murdered Twin Tried To Protect Parents

mcandrew2A Montgomery County man apparently tried to protect his parents against an attack by his twin brother, but 70-year-old Joseph McAndrew, his 64-year-old wife Susan and their 23-year-old son James McAndrew were all stabbed to death in their Upper Merion home. 23-year-old Joseph McAndrew Junior (pictured here) is charged with first and third degree murder.  District Attorney Risa Ferman says James was a brilliant young man who graduated recently from Penn State University, while Joseph was an introvert and loner, but James was his greatest supporter and advocate.  Police say the victims were found dead with multiple cuts and abrasions in their home on Holstein Road in the Gulph Mills section of the township, stabbed with an 18-inch dagger.  Ferman says it is clear from the number of defensive wounds on James that the two brothers had struggled.  She says the motive may never be known, but some kind of mental illness was clearly involved.  A friend of James says Joseph had schizophrenia.  Police found the bodies in the kitchen at about 7:00pm Saturday.  Joseph McAndrew Junior’s pants and shoes were covered with blood, and bloody footprints were consistent with the shoes he was wearing.
