Manilla Gets 10 To 25, Requests Minimum-Security lockup

Bucks_County_CourthouseMontgomery County lawyer David Manilla is asking for permission to serve his state prison term in the minimum-security geriatric facility at Laurel Highlands. The 49-year-old Worcester resident was given 10 to 25 years Friday for shooting and killing hunter Barry Groh of Quakertown.  He pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and other offenses, and Bucks County Judge Albert Cepparulo told him he was lucky he was not charged with murder.  His lawyers say Manilla should be housed in the minimum-security prison because of health problems, including three prior heart attacks.  While the decision is up to state prison officials, prosecutor Robert James says he hopes they send him to a secure facility, not someplace where he can walk around in a bathrobe and slippers.  The shooting happened on opening day of deer season last November as the 52-year-old Groh dragged a deer along the Tohickon Creek near a Richland Township property that Manilla owned.  While this case appears to be wrapped up, it is not the end of his legal troubles.  A federal grand jury is investigating how he managed to get numerous guns when he was not allowed to own any legally, and he faces a wrongful death civil lawsuit filed by Groh’s family.
