Soldier Kills Self After Killing 4 Others

A U.S. Army captain suspected of killing four people and shooting and wounding two Bucks County police officers has been found dead, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. 37-year-old Leonard Egland’s body was found late Sunday afternoon behind Action Karate, near York and Almshouse Roads in Warwick Township.  The vacant lot where police found his body is across the street from a lot where they found his pickup truck parked early Sunday morning.  He was suspected of killing his estranged or former wife, 36-year-old Carrie Egland, Saturday in Virginia.  Carrie Egland’s boyfriend and his young son were also killed in Virginia.  After those killings, authorities say he drove to Bucks County where he shot and killed his former mother-in-law, 66-year-old Barbara Ruehl, as she sat in a chair at her Buckingham home.  After that he drove with his young daughter to Saint Luke’s Hospital in Quakertown, where he left her along with a note hinting at suicide.  He headed from there to Doylestown, where he fired at police near Routes 313 and 611, wounding a Doylestown officer and a state trooper.  He fired at police again early Sunday morning from behind a dumpster at a gas station next to the lot where they found his body.
