Driver Ends Police Chase By Committing Suicide

A Bucks County man is dead after a police chase that ended near Quakertown. It started around 12:30 Tuesday morning near Summit Avenue in Hilltown when police, who received a report that he had a gun and planned to kill himself, tried to stop him outside an apartment complex.  Instead of stopping he pulled his 1987 BMW onto Route 309 and fired several times at police pursuing him.  Pennsylvania State Police and several other local departments joined the chase.  As he drove through Quakertown police put stop sticks on the highway to flatten his tires, but he kept on going with flat rear tires.  District Attorney David Heckler says the car plunged into a ditch near Route 309 and Tollgate Road in Richland Township after 27-year-old Richard Cantando of Blooming Glen shot himself in the head, apparently because he was distraught over the prospect of going to jail for violating his probation.  He was pronounced dead at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Quakertown.
