Montco Man Gets Probation For Mammoth Tusk Theft

A Montgomery County man who admitted stealing an ivory tusk from government property in Alaska has been given three years on probation. 65-year-old millionaire Robert Franz of Plymouth Meeting must also pay a $100,000 fine and do 300 hours of community service.  Federal prosecutors say he took the tusk in 2007 while hiking and canoeing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge on the North Slope of Alaska.

It looked like an elephant tusk but it was really a 20-pound, 10,000-year-old fossilized tusk from a mammoth.  Assistant U.S. Attorney Alicia Freind says he was motivated by greed and eccentric need, and he used his wealth to gain access to protected lands, and then willfully pillage artifacts and natural resources with an outfitter and tour guide, Karen Jettmar.  She faces similar charges in Alaska.
