Driver In Fatal School Bus Crash Approved For Work Release

A former school bus driver who admitted causing a crash that left one man dead and another seriously injured has been approved for work release while serving one to two years in Montgomery County Prison. 40-year-old Frederick Poust of Schwenksville pleaded guilty last summer to homicide by vehicle and recklessly endangering other persons.

The crash occurred early in 2010 when the bus and a car collided in front of the Perkiomen Valley West Middle School, on Route 73 near Swamp Creek Road in Zieglerville.  The dead man, 27-year-old Richard Taylor of Gilbertsville, was a passenger in a Honda Civic driven by his employer, 43-year-old contractor Freddy Carroll of Perkiomenville, who suffered serious injuries.  Carroll says the sentence was too light in the first place, and he is outraged at the work release approval.

In his petition for work release, Poust said he is a model prisoner who goes to church every day.  Police say Poust turned left in front of the Honda as he tried to enter school property.  Investigators found that he caused the crash by improperly entering the opposing traffic lane.  Onboard bus video showed him driving recklessly and running ten stop signs prior to the crash.
