Woman Arrested For Allegedly Stealing Ben’s Bust

A cleaning woman accused of stealing a rare marble bust of Benjamin Franklin from a Main Line mansion has been arrested.

46-year-old Andrea Lawton of Philadelphia and Mobile, Alabama is charged with theft, fraud and interstate transportation of stolen property.

Police took her into custody Friday as she got off a bus in Elkton, Maryland carrying the bust in a gunny sack.  It has a crack in the breastplate that the owner hopes can be fixed.  Lower Merion Township Police say she stole it from the Bryn Mawr home of historic artifact collector George D’Angelo.

She worked there briefly over the summer, and the bust disappeared three days after the cleaning company fired her.  It’s valued at $3 million, but D’Angelo doubts that she could have sold it.  He asks, “What in Heaven’s name would you think she was going to do with it?”
