Sestak, Specter State Their Cases On WNPV

wnpv_politicsCongressman Joe Sestak and U.S. Senator Arlen Specter took their race for the Democratic senate nomination to the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest Wednesday. Sestak said he will do better in November against former Congressman Pat Toomey, who chased specter out of the Republican primary, causing the incumbent senator to switch parties.

“Arlen Specter ran from Pat Toomey because he couldn’t beat him.  Look at the poll that came out yesterday.  Arlen Specter gets beat by Pat Toomey 50 to 38.  Against me it’s a dead heat statistically, 42 to 40.  People are so anti-Specter because they know he just switches positions.  Pennsylvanians also want a person of conviction.  They don’t always expect to agree with you.”

Specter, who beat Toomey in a tight Republican primary six years ago, said he’s up to the challenge.

“When Representative Sestak talks about Toomey, that’s a big point in this whole matter.  Who is best prepared to beat Toomey?  Look, I’ve beat him before and I can beat him again, but you’re going to have to be tough and resolute.”

When Sestak challenges him on whether he’s a real Democrat, Specter said he reminds people that he has voted with the Democrats more than he has voted with the Republicans on the big issues, including health care reform and the economic stimulus program.  Parts of Montgomery County are in Sestak’s district, as well as the district Toomey represented during his three terms in congress.
