Sestak Beats Specter In Senate Race

wnpv_politicsMontgomery and Delaware County Congressman Joe Sestak has defeated veteran U.S. Senator Arlen Specter in the Democratic Primary Election. Specter was gracious in defeat.

“It’s been a great privilege to serve the people of Pennsylvania.”

Sestak extended an olive branch to his former rival.

“The standard’s already been set by Senator Specter, who said tonight so graciously, ‘Joe, I’m going to support you,’ without a moment of hesitation, and the president called and I told him I would be honored and humbled to have his support.”

Former Congressman Pat Toomey, who represented the Lehigh Valley and part of Montgomery County for three terms, got the Republican senate nomination, easily outdistancing Peg Luksik.  Republican Attorney General Tom Corbett coasted to a win over State Representative Sam Rohrer for the right to run for governor against Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato, who won the Democratic nomination, finishing ahead of Auditor General Jack Wagner and State Senator Anthony Hardy Williams.  Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel finished last in the four-way field, but he got the most votes for governor from Democrats in his home county.

“I was very pleased by the victory that the voters of Montgomery County gave to me tonight.  I’m very grateful for that level of support locally, and my inclination now is to keep working as a county commissioner because there’s lots to do in the courthouse.”

Hoeffel says he is undecided about running for another term as commissioner.

Bucks County Commissioner Jim Cawley, who won the GOP nomination for lieutenant governor, says he and Corbett will bring the voters a message about fiscal responsibility.

“We are going to be very aggressive in taking that message all across the commonwealth, from the southeast to the northwest and everywhere in between.  It’s going to be an exciting chance for us to get our Pennsylvania back and put it on the right track.”

Cawley came out on top in a field of nine.
