New Push For Distracted Driving Law In PA

wnpv_politicsMontgomery County State Representative Josh Shapiro says he has joined with several other lawmakers, people from the medical and insurance industries and law enforcement in a push to get distracted driving bills passed this year. He says the house has voted three times to pass the legislation and send it to the senate, where it got watered down.  He says the house and senate versions have two main differences for all drivers.

“One, our bill would apply to both teen and adult drivers and would ban texting and talking on hand-held cell phones.  Second, our bill in the house was primary enforcement, meaning a police officer could pull you over for texting while driving, for example, and the important thing there is that we want the officers to have that ability so that they can prevent the accident from occurring in the first place.”

Shapiro says the senate also stripped out provisions that would require teen motorists to have more driver training before getting a license and limit the number of passengers a driver under the age of 18 could carry.  The law would allow them to have no more than one passenger under the age of 18.  He says the teen provisions need to be in the final bill.  He says he hopes lawmakers can get a bill passed before they head home for elections and the holidays.
