Taylor-Stephens Forum On WNPV

wnpv_politicsTax reform was one of many issues discussed Thursday in a joint appearance by Montgomery County State Representative Rick Taylor and his Election Day opponent, Todd Stephens, on the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest. In the current economy, Taylor said, the Corporate Net Income Tax is a good place to start.

“We’ve got to change the tax structure, I’ve supported that, and we need to change the Corporate Net Income Tax.  Clearly it’s too high, and the question for a lot of folks is, ‘How do you make up for the lost revenue?’  I think, at the end of the day, that we need to say to our businesses that we want you to stay here and we want to bring more businesses in.”

Stephens said Taylor and his fellow Democrats have been talking about cutting business taxes for years, but they haven’t actually done it.

“They made the decision to spend more money, as opposed to cutting taxes, and they did it every single year they’ve been in office, so it’s great to say they want to cut business taxes, but Representative Taylor voted to increase the Capital Stock and Franchise Tax while he was there.  The bottom line is you’ve got to make the decision – lower the taxes or increase spending, and they chose to increase spending.”

He said the Democrats have controlled the House of Representatives and the governor’s office for the last four years, and they have continued taxing and spending.  The two men also had differing views on teacher strikes.  Stephens said he is a Hatboro-Horsham High School graduate and the son of two public school teachers, but he would vote to ban strikes for one reason.

“Our children should not be used as pawns in disagreements between adults.  We reach fair agreements with our police and firefighters.  I think we can ensure that teachers are paid fairly and still build our quality education without interrupting the lives of these young people.”

Taylor said he would not vote to bar teachers from striking because he respects their rights.

“If you want to have a good education you end up having to look at the rights of the teachers, and I’ve always believed that collective bargaining is a very American trait.  I don’t believe in depriving them of the right of collective bargaining.”

At the same time, Taylor said, lawmakers should look at ways to assure that strikes are the very last resort.  He is a Democrat, while Stephens is a Republican and a former Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney.
