Corbett Wins Pa Governor’s Office

tom_corbettRepublican Tom Corbett (pictured here) defeated Democrat Dan Onorato in the race for Governor of Pennsylvania. In his victory speech Tuesday night, Corbett pledged to meet tough challenges.

“We’ll provide the courage to make what we know are going to be the very tough decisions with the challenges that we face, with the decisions when it comes to the economy and the pensions, and we’ll make those decisions regardless of the political consequences.  We are not going to look at what gets us re-elected, we’re going to look at what’s in the best interest not only for the people of Pennsylvania, but particularly for the children of  Pennsylvania.”

Corbett won 55 percent of the vote, a total of more than two million.  The Lieutenant Governor-Elect, Bucks County Commissioner Jim Cawley, says he and Corbett have big goals.

“We’re going to tackle things like reducing the size of the state automobile fleet, eliminating vouchers, WAMS, and extra money that legislators get.  We’re going to be all about making government more transparent and more efficient for the taxpayer.”

He says he’s looking forward to a full partnership in the Corbett administration.

“The people of Pennsylvania will see a relationship very similar to and akin to the one that Tom Ridge and Mark Schweiker had.  It will be one of mutual respect, and we will work side-by-side to, first and foremost, put Pennsylvanians back to work.”

Like Cawley, Schweiker was a Bucks County Commissioner before being elected lieutenant governor.  He served as governor for a little more than a year after President Bush appointed Governor Ridge as the nation’s first Secretary of Homeland Security.
