Stephens: Spending Out Of Control In Both Harrisburg And Washington

wnpv_politicsRepublican Todd Stephens, who beat two-term Democratic State Representative Rick Taylor on Election Day Tuesday, says the voters were not just angry with congress and the White House when they elected a Republican governor and GOP majorities in both houses of the state legislature. He says they saw similar problems in the state capital.

“Harrisburg has had the same problems that DC has had, just on a smaller scale.  Their spending in Harrisburg has been out of control, the same way it’s been in DC.  It doesn’t get the same attention down here in Southeastern Pennsylvania, but we face many of the same issues that exist in Washington.”

He says one of the first things lawmakers have to do when the GOP takes control of the house and senate in January is look for ways to cut spending.

“The voters have entrusted us with an awesome responsibility, and we’ve got to roll up our sleeves and get to work at cutting the wasteful spending.  We’ve got to look at what the legislature’s spending money on and also take a look at some of these other areas.  The Democratic Auditor General says there’s hundreds of millions of dollars of waste, fraud and abuse in the public welfare system.  We’ve got to take a look at that.”

Stephens says the new Republican lawmakers will also have to look at corporate welfare, where hand-picked politically-connected companies get state contracts.  He’s a Horsham resident and a former Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney.
