Fitzpatrick: Repeal Healthcare Reform

Mike_Fitzpatrick_The U.S. House of Representatives has a vote set for this week on legislation to repeal the healthcare reform bill that became law last year. Bucks County Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (pictured here) says he will vote for the repeal, even though Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid says he will not bring it up for a vote.

“While it’s important to recognize that the senate may have a different view of things, I don’t want to pre-suppose what they will do.   I would rather pass the repeal bill, begin to go about creating a better healthcare system at a lower cost here in the House of Representatives, and then challenge the senate to do the right thing.  I think it’ll be a close call in the senate.”

He says House Republicans will vote for the repeal, reflecting the will of the people who sent them to Washington, and the senate can’t ignore that.

“It’s about passing what you can pass in the people’s house.  We’re the side of the United States Congress that’s closer to the people and as a result, because we run every two years, I think that we more closely reflect the will of the people, and the senate needs to hear that.”

Fitzpatrick says a lot of the legislative process is about putting ideas before the public and letting the voters put pressure on their elected officials.  He says President Obama will have to consider some kind of compromise, even though he has threatened to veto any repeal.

“I think he’s mindful that he needs the support of the American people to continue in office, and I’m sure he’d like to continue to serve, and so I think he made an attempt at healthcare reform. He was off the mark.  I think they knew at the time they passed it that the people didn’t want it, and he now should deal with it.”

Fitzpatrick says the law should make healthcare both available and affordable, and if the current law remains on the books it will be the number-one issue in Obama’s re-election campaign.
