Streetscape Improvement Project Starting

road_constructionLansdale officials held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for $3.2 million worth of streetscape improvements along Main, Broad and Madison Streets. Borough Council Public Works Committee Chairman Mike Riccio says crews will move overhead utility lines underground during the winter, and then start street and sidewalk work in the spring.

“The contractor will begin work on Main Street and Madison simultaneously.  This will result in a new street from Main Street to Richardson Avenue.  All of the work on Madison Street is expected to be completed by the summer of 2011.  Construction on all phases will include new curbing and patterned sidewalks, replacing deteriorating ones, providing a uniform downtown area as well as improving pedestrian safety.”

Riccio says their main goal is to attract more pedestrian traffic to the central business district, which is a critical element in economic development.  To that end, the plans call for new benches and bike racks and better lighting using energy-saving LED lamps.  State and federal grants are paying most of the cost.
