Hoeffel Explains Decision To Step Down

wnpv_politicsMontgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel says he decided not to run for re-election for several reasons, including disagreements with people in his own party. He says they are mainly in the area of opening up county government.

“There are people in both parties who are more interested in the business end of government – jobs, appointments, contracts – the patronage rather than the policy end of government, and I’ve always been interested in the policy side primarily.  But someone has to hire the lawyers and the engineers that you need and the rest, and so the challenge is to do it openly with a transparent process, require competition.”

Hoeffel says the Republicans have been squabbling for 20 years over which party faction gets the goodies, and he does not want the Democrats to fall into the same kind of internal fighting based on patronage, not principle.  He says State Representative Josh Shapiro and Whitemarsh Township Supervisor Leslie Richards will continue his efforts if they are elected as county commissioners.  They will probably become the endorsed ticket when the Montgomery County Democratic Committee meets later this month.  He appeared Tuesday on the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest.
