Montgomery County Commissioners Chairman Jim Matthews has removed County Treasurer Tom Ellis from the Independence Blue Cross Board, with a second vote from Vice Chairman Joe Hoeffel. Earlier this year Ellis said the county had borrowed too much, spent too much and jeopardized its AAA bond rating. Matthews says denigrating the team you are on is unacceptable. Ellis says he was just doing his job as an independent row officer, and the real reason Matthews booted him from the board was his position as Finance Director for Commissioner Bruce Castor’s re-election campaign. Castor voted against removing Ellis from the board, saying he does not believe they should fire someone just for criticizing the administration. Hoeffel says he voted to remove Ellis because of allegations that he sexually harassed a former girlfriend in her county office with threatening e-mails and phone calls about a year ago.
