Crash Victim’s Mom Wants New Teen Driving Laws

cemeteryA Montgomery County mother whose teenage son died in a car crash was in Washington Tuesday, urging congress to pass new licensing laws for beginning drivers restricting the number and age of passengers, nighttime driving and cell phone use, among other things. Marlene Case of Lower Pottsgrove lost her 17-year-old son Andrew more than a year ago.  The teenage driver, who had his license for only three weeks, admitted that he smoked marijuana an hour before he ran his Honda Pilot SUV off the road and up an embankment, flipped over and crashed into an oncoming car, killing two of his best friends.  It happened in November of 2009 on Route 724 in East Coventry Township in Chester County.  Andrew Case and 16-year-old Michael Cantamaglia of Barto, in Berks County, were pronounced dead at the scene.  They attended Pottsgrove Area High School along with the driver, 16-year-old Austin Ewers.  He had five teenage passengers at the time, including Pottsgrove classmates Dylan Kunrath and Kyle Hilegas, and also Garrett Sterner of Telford.
