The Montgomery County Commissioners have approved an application to acquire the runway and about 450 to 500 acres of adjacent land at the Willow Grove Naval Air Station, which is being dramatically downsized later this year. 892 acres of the 1,100-acre base will be available for re-use. The commissioners say they have no interest in operating an airport, but they might want to mothball the runway for possible future use. They have directed the County Planning Commission to study future uses and find out how much it would cost to tear up the runway. The Pennsylvania Aviation Council has estimated the cost at $50 to $55 million.
