Montco Dems Continue Registration Gains

wnpv_politicsMarch registration figures show Montgomery County Democrats gaining on Republicans by more than 2,700 voters since the November election. Nearly 46 percent of the county’s voters are now Democrats, just over 39 percent are Republicans and nearly 15 percent are either nonpartisan or registered with a minor party.  County Democratic Committee Chairman Marcel Groen says it’s largely because they have good elected officials, including 13th District Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz.

“It’s been a team effort, and she’s certainly been an important part of the team.  In her case she provides good constituent service, clearly the voters agree with most of her positions on issues, she’s been a national leader and she reacts well with our voters.”

He says they have also made gains at the local level, and that’s another major factor.

“It’s huge.  I think the six most populous municipalities now have more Democrats than Republicans in them: Lower Merion, Abington, Cheltenham, Norristown, Upper Dublin and Springfield.  Upper Merion is very close.  It’s been very steady.  We’ve built a foundation.”

Groen says Montgomery County Democrats have been gaining registration on Republicans every year since 1997, and another factor is that Democrats have been working together as a team while the voters have grown tired of the infighting that has been going on among Republicans for the last two decades.  He says Democrats now have a registration edge of more than 35,000 voters, and they can win the county courthouse in November if they get enough people to the polls.
