Obama In Bucks Co

wnpv_politicsPresident Obama was in Bucks County Wednesday afternoon, addressing a crowd at Gamesa, a Falls Township company that makes wind turbine parts. He talked about energy policy and said the nation will see great benefits if it cuts oil imports by one third and gets 80 percent of its electricity from clean sources.

“We won’t be sending billions of dollars a day to the Middle East.  We can potentially keep some of that invested right here at home or reduce the pollution that’s disrupting our climate and threatening the planet that we leave for our children and our grandchildren.  We’ll become more energy-independent and we’ll start innovation and entrepreneurship across America.”

Obama said the country will have to out-innovate the rest of the world if it wants to win the future, and the former U.S. Steel Fairless Works site where he spoke is a good example.  It was converted from a steel mill to a new clean energy use.  His speech was billed as a major energy policy address, but he devoted nearly half of it to the congressional deadlock over last year’s budget.  He said Democrats have made many concessions to Republicans.

“We’ve now agreed to cut as much spending as the Republicans in congress originally asked for.  I’ve got some Democrats mad at me, but I said ‘Let’s get past last year’s budget and let’s focus on the future,’ so we’ve agreed on a compromise, but somehow we still don’t have a deal because some folks are trying to inject politics into what should be a simple debate about how to pay our bills.”

He said the government could shut down Saturday if the two sides can’t reach common ground, and that would be very harmful at a time when the economy is starting to recover.
