Vouchers Face Opposition

wnpv_politicsMontgomery County State Senator Daylin Leach says he opposes a voucher plan that would give parents state tax dollars to help pay their children’s tuition at private and parochial schools. He says the plan has several problems, including a lack of any guarantee that a better school will take an under-performing child.

“No one is required to take any student.  In fact, most private schools charge far more money than the vouchers would be, and they have certain requirements in terms of academic performance and other things.”

He says the plan also raises constitutional issues.

“Pennsylvania’s Constitution says that you cannot give money that was intended for education to a private school in Section 15 of Article 3, and in Section 30 you can’t give any money to a religious school of any kind without two thirds of the vote of the legislature.”

A survey released this week says 61 percent of the Pennsylvanians polled oppose the voucher plan, and the opposition rises to 71 percent once they get the specifics of a bill now before state lawmakers.
