Ferman: People Less Afraid To Talk About Child Sex Abuse

Risa_FermanMontgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman (pictured here) says she does not believe the sexual abuse of children is any more prevalent today than it was 15 or 20 years ago, but you hear more about it because people are less afraid to talk about it. “For so many years, and I think back to when I was a kid, no one ever talked about it.  It was just this secret that something happened to kids, and they just held inside and were damaged in so many ways.  Over the years we’ve seen that there are people out there that would hurt kids, more often than not people who they know.  This is not a stranger danger situation.  It’s usually someone who was either in the house or invited into the house.  It’s someone who is trusted by the family.”

Ferman says bringing cases to justice was difficult years ago because the child victims had to talk about it so many times they reached the point where they couldn’t do it anymore.  She says bringing the discussion out in the open is actually making prosecutions easier because today they have the children talk one time in a carefully controlled environment, and they preserve the evidence for trial rather than letting defense lawyers rip children apart on the witness stand.  She appeared Monday on the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest.
