Brown And Castor: Looking Forward, But Matthews An Issue

JennyBrownLower Merion Township Commissioner Jenny Brown (pictured here), who is running for Montgomery County Commissioner, says she wants to look forward in her campaign, and not concentrate too much on bad blood between incumbents Bruce Castor and Jim Matthews. “It’s too critical of a time in the county for us to be distracted by a soap opera and really get to the substance of what Commissioner Castor has been trying to do, and I’ve also been trying to do in Lower Merion having to be the vocal minority, the loyal minority, but having to point out where people are steering the municipality wrong.”

Brown is on the Republican ticket along with Castor, who she says has been the sole voice of fiscal sanity on the county board for the last 3 1/2 years.  Castor says Matthews calls himself a Republican, but it’s not true.

“The chairman of our party said in public, ‘He is no longer a Republican.’  We have a Democrat administration, and the biggest fight is going to be over who to blame the disaster on because our opponents are going to say, ‘The Republicans won the election and they’re the ones who screwed it up.’  We’re going to say, ‘We won the election, but because of a traitor the Democrats took control, and they screwed it up.’  Whoever hangs Jim Matthews around the neck of the other side wins.”

Castor says the county is deeper in debt than it has ever been before in its entire history, regardless of whether or not the figures are adjusted for inflation, and it’s in danger of losing its AAA credit rating.  He and Brown face Democrats Josh Shapiro and Leslie Richards in the November election.  They appeared Wednesday on the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest.
