State Seeks Proposals For New Buildings On Graterford Grounds

GovernorCorbettThe state is accepting proposals for a new construction project that will replace Graterford State Prison, built in 1929. Earlier plans are being revised following a review by Governor Tom Corbett (pictured here) and His Administration.  Susan McNaughton of the Pennsylvania Corrections Department says it will have a Capital Unit, commonly known as a “Death Row.”  She says most condemned inmates go to a Green County prison, even though many committed their crimes in the southeast, and the new unit will save money on transportation and security when they have to appear in court.

“Those individuals have to be transported from the western part of the state all the way to the Philadelphia area and, just based on the nature of their crime and their sentence they are maximum-security inmates, so they require a lot more officers for each individual transport and it is expensive.  This will cut that down greatly because we’ll have them a lot closer to the Philadelphia area for court purposes.”

McNaughton says it will also have a transitional unit for women to help them prepare for their return to society prior to their release.  She says the corrections department and the governor know what they want, and now they are seeking proposals from contractors.
