Lawmaker Not Sure What Reducing Size Of Legislature Will Accomplish

Kate_HarperMontgomery County State Representative Kate Harper (pictured here) says she’s not sure what people think they will accomplish by reducing the size of the Pennsylvania Legislature, as some of her colleagues have proposed. She says making it a part-time job might be a better way to achieve legislative reform.

“I thought a part-time legislature might be a better way to go.  I do think that it’s a full-time job and it’s probably the kind of job you couldn’t do forever, so I don’t know.  I’d like to look at all sorts of things, but first I’d like to define the problem.”

She says she has about 60,000 constituents now, she responds personally to many of their concerns, and a larger district would make that more difficult.

“Maybe if I had many more of those people I wouldn’t be able to do that.  I mean I do set a standard of trying to be responsive, and I think in a democracy that’s what people want from their representatives.”

Harper says maybe making it a part-time job would bring in a more diverse group of lawmakers, but either way the amount of money saved would be minimal.
