Economist: Recession Over, Nobody Noticed

univestUnivest Economist Gary Wolfer says the recession has technically been over for a while, but most workers never noticed. He says they see the high unemployment rate and the same signs business owners see.

“People are so concerned about their future at work and their future financial situation.  We just have so many concerns among consumers that they don’t have the appetite to spend.”

He says a dichotomy among businesses is preventing growth.  The small ones are still struggling, but the big ones have had many options to protect the bottom line and stay competitive globally.

“They’ve done a number of rationalizations of cost, laying off workers, closing down operations, and in the 25 years that I’ve been in this business I’ve never seen Corporate America, in the larger size aspect, that competitive with its global peers, so American companies at this point are pre-eminent.  The problem, though, is they’re not creating any jobs either.  They’re holding back.”

Wolfer says it could be a combination of uncertainty over the future of health care and onerous new banking regulations, but businesses are not creating jobs and the economy is not growing.  He Appeared Wednesday on the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest.
