Cawley: State Spending Did Not Stop Higher Ed Tuition Hikes

Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor Jim Cawley says much has been made of higher education funding cuts in Governor Corbett’s new budget, but the facts speak for themselves. He says over the last ten years or more, when state spending on state-owned and state-related universities went up or stayed the same, tuitions went up too.

“In-state tuition went up exponentially at all of those schools, so what we discovered was the direct correlation that providing more dollars would keep tuition low isn’t the case.”

Cawley says Governor Corbett has appointed a commission of very bright people from the public and private sectors to look at what can work and provide a good, but affordable, higher education.  He appeared Wednesday on the WNPV talk program “Comment Please by Univest.”
