Upper Gwynedd officials are appealing a Zoning Hearing Board decision allowing Wawa to expand the store in the Sumney-Forge Shopping Center at Valley Forge Road and Sumneytown Pike. The company wants to add a gas station and keep the existing uses, and Township Solicitor Bob Kerns says the commissioners thought it would over-crowd the property.
“They’re adding another building. It’s a canopy, and our zoning code considers a canopy like that to be a building, and the code says they’re only allowed to have one building. They also thought that, with the parking lot laid out the way it is, there was not enough parking on the site for the uses they wanted to make of it.”
Kerns says Wawa wants to put the gas pumps and canopy in front of the existing store and have customers park in a little-used lot behind the building. He says that lot is at a lower level than the store and, in combination with cars coming and going at the pumps out front, the commissioners thought it would create a safety issue.
