Montco Workers Get Pay Raise

moneyThe Montgomery County Commissioners have approved a two percent pay raise for county employees. Chairman Josh Shapiro says they deserve a raise, and employees are happy the commissioners are listening to them.

“They raise issues like the mothers’ nursing room, which we now have, to a garden where people can eat their lunch.  All of these things matter, and when people walk up and down the courthouse steps it’s not just visitors, but it’s county employees feeling good about the environment that they’re walking into.”

He says the money is in the budget, and it’s accounted for going forward.

Commissioner Bruce Castor says the employees, in effect, have taken a pay cut since their last raise 3 ½ years ago.

“They had to pay much more for their health benefits than they had in the past and had no corresponding raise to pay for it, so they effectively had their pay cut over the last 3 ½ years by a great deal.”

He says he’s a fiscal conservative, but the commissioners must make practical decisions to keep the government operating.
