Perkasie Reeling From Marino Shooting

The dust hasn't settled yet from the killing of a mentally ill man by a Perkasie police officer in June.

About two dozen friends and family members of 26-year-old Michael Marino attended the meeting of the Perkasie Borough Council last night to make a statement about his shooting while handcuffed and struggling with police. His step brother David Cook asked the council to find a way forward in light of budget cuts at every level that affect the care of the mentally ill.

"It can be very difficult to deal with, we've seen in this situation that the officers involved were not properly prepared and we'd like to know if there's a plan to train Perkasie officers."

Borough Council President Matthew Aigeldinger told those at the meeting that the Perkasie police force is thoroughly trained.

"This incident will now be reviewed from a polices, procedures and training standpoint by the chief. The public and members of the department are owed every bit of due diligence to ensure that our officers continue to be highly trained and adequately prepared."

The Bucks County District Attorney ruled last month the shooting was not criminal, but all the same would not have happened had police officers on scene handled the situation differently.
