The Montgomery County Commissioners are ordering a new bus to carry inmates between the county prison in Eagleville and the courthouse in Norristown.
Chairman Josh Shapiro says they have to make the investment for public safety.
The old bus, bought 14 years ago, has had several breakdowns including one during rush hour on Main Street in Norristown.
With a price tag of a little more than $142,000, it costs more than the average bus because it has several security features, including separate sections for the driver and sheriff’s deputies and the most dangerous inmates and equipment allowing deputies to handcuff inmates to their seats.
