Stephens Cites Recent Case For Proposed Child Sex Abuse Law

Montgomery County State Rep. Todd Stephens cites a recent case for support of House Bill 436, which compels anyone working with children to report sex abuse, without having to go through a chain of command. Stephens says, Upper Perkiomen Township Camp Director, Ryan Wexelblatt, was charged with failure to report the sex abuse of a juvenile in early July, after camp counselors told him about the incident.

“I am hopeful, that in the fall, there will be some serious discussion about all the child abuse protection bills. Frankly, I would hope that the statute that I am seeking to enact never gets utilized. If everybody reported suspected child abuse, then no one would be prosecuted for failing to do so and I think our children will be all the better for it.”

Stephens adds, under current laws, Wexelblatt is facing a misdemeanor of the third degree, which is the lowest grade criminal offense above a traffic ticket.
