Amuso Says Standardized Tests Have Inherent Problems

wnpv_schoolsOutgoing Souderton Area Superintendent of Schools Charles Amuso says the state system of evaluating schools based on standardized test scores has built-in problems, especially for the better schools. He says it’s hard to show improvement when you start with a high level of achievement.

“It’s difficult to increase by even small numbers, but I think that’s what the administrators and teachers that I know at the district are committed to doing.  We have always focused on students achieving and student performance, but now that’s going to be more front and center.”

Doctor Amuso says judging a school’s performance based on one test, or a series of tests, is not a true measure of learning, especially for kids who are not good test-takers.  He says some students who give good answers in class are not so good at putting things down on paper.  Wednesday is his last day on the job.  He appeared Monday on the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest.
