Legendary Pennridge Coach Dies

bibleLong-time Pennridge High School Football and Track Coach Wayne “Pud” Helman has died. During his 26 years as head football coach his teams won six Bux-Mont League championships, including two that Pennridge shared with other teams.  He was a 1944 graduate of Lansdale High School, where he lettered in football, basketball and track.  He was also senior class president.  He went on to the University of Pennsylvania, where he played four years of football.  He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1949 and earned a master’s degree in education in 1952.  Pennridge hired him as a coach and physical education teacher in 1955.  He stepped down as football coach in 1982, and then served as the high school athletics director until his retirement in 1991.  Pennridge Superintendent of Schools Robert Kish issued a statement Friday saying, "Mr. Helman will be forever be an important part of the history and legacy of the Pennridge School District. His contributions both as a coach and a teacher continue to be acknowledged, appreciated and valued.  "It is always sad to lose someone who has been such a positive effect on the thousands of students he came in contact with during his time with the district."
