Pennridge Schools Start Summer Hours

sunThe Pennridge School District started Summer Hours Monday, June 27, which means everyone works 10 1/2 hours a day Monday through Thursday and the buildings are closed Friday through Sunday. Assistant Superintendent of Schools Bruce Bovard says it saves money and also has other benefits.

“We can save energy costs of air conditioning and other electrical costs all the way from Thursday evening through the start of the day on Monday morning.  It also allows our custodians and the other people that are doing projects at the buildings to get them prepped and cleaned, so it gives them a longer period of time when they can do more jobs during the day.  They have told me it has been very beneficial.”

Doctor Bovard says this is the third year Pennridge has gone to the four-days-a-week summer schedule, and it saves about $12,000 a year in energy costs, largely on air conditioning.  He says they have summer classes only at the high school and one elementary school, but they do a lot of hiring, program and staff development and preparation for the new school year over the summer, so the people who are on duty have plenty of work to do.
