Victim/Witness Advocate: Sandusky Sick And Disturbed

penn-state-logoThe Pennsylvania Victim/Witness Program Executive Director says the shock, outrage and disgust over the Penn State child sex abuse scandal is justified. Jennifer Storm says she has no doubt about the kind of person former Assistant Football Coach Jerry Sandusky is.

“From reading the grand jury presentment and listening to his defense, it appears that he is an extremely sick and disturbed man.”

She says fired Head Football Coach Joe Paterno complied with the law by telling the athletic director about alleged sexual contact between Sandusky and a young boy, but she does not buy the argument that he reported it to his superior.

“Joe Paterno was the superior up there.  Joe Paterno was that institution.  If he had taken the information that was given him and reported it to the police, and stood out and said, ‘I’m going to protect these kids.  This needs to be reported, this kid needs to be found, he needs to be helped,’ that man would have been revered as a hero.  Instead we’re looking at many years later.  We don’t even know how many other kids have been harmed since that date.  He made a really, really bad judgment call.”

Storm says the grand jury report is not completely clear about what Joe Paterno knew and when he knew it, but he knew enough to go to the police and stop further abuse and chose not to, and she believes the Penn State trustees made the right decision in firing him.  She appeared Thursday on the WNPV talk program Comment Please by Univest.
