Bucks Co Jury Awards Amputee $14 Million

A Former Pennsbury High School student who was seriously injured when a school bus plowed into a crowd of students, injuring 17, has been awarded $14 million. A Bucks County jury agreed unanimously on the amount in handing down the award Monday.  Officials admitted that driver error was the cause.  Ashley Zauflik had part of her left leg amputated to save her life, and she was in and out of the hospital for months.  She was 17 at the time, in January of 2007.  The jury awarded $2.9 million for past and future medical costs, including $2 million for a high-tech artificial leg, and more than $11 million for pain, suffering and disfigurement.  The amount could be reduced to $500,000 under a state law limiting liability for school districts, but her lawyer says he will appeal all the way to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court if necessary.
