North Penn School District officials are looking at the impact of Catholic elementary school mergers on enrollment. Within the North Penn District, Saint Maria Goretti in Hatfield is merging with Corpus Christi in Upper Gwynedd at the Upper Gwynedd site and Saint Rose of Lima in North Wales is merging with Saint Stanislaus in Lansdale at the Lansdale site. Superintendent of Schools Curt Dietrich says it’s too soon to know how many more Catholic parents will choose public schools, but he believes it will impact busing.
“We do provide transportation for the students at those schools, and we’ll now have to re-do routes at some additional cost because of the fewer schools to attend, which means some students will have to travel a greater distance.”
Meanwhile, Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput is calling on Catholics upset about parochial schools closing to push their state lawmakers to support school vouchers. He says vouchers to help parents pay their children’s tuition are a matter of parental rights and basic justice.
