North Wales Elementary School has received a Healthier US School Challenge Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The voluntary program recognizes schools that promote nutrition and physical activity. North Penn Coordinator of School Nutrition Services Pam Gallagher says the kids are the biggest winners.
“The students get a better, healthier, more nutritious wholesome meal, and then the school gets a financial award. In this case North Wales Elementary received $500 and a bronze medal for its participation in this program.”
Gallagher wants the $500 to go to nutrition and health programs. She says North Wales elementary has added more fresh fruits and vegetables to its regular menu, all bread and pasta products served there are made with whole grains, and the North Penn School District will extend the offerings to all 13 elementary schools during the 2012-2013 school year.
