Ed DeChellis is leaving his alma mater. In a bit of a surprise move to some, DeChellis accepted the head basketball job at Navy, two months after leading his team two rounds into the NCAA tournament. In his nine season at Happy Valley, DeChellis posted a 222-232 record. That included the 2009 NIT championship as well as an appearance in the Big Ten Championship game this past season. So now instead of competing in the Big Ten with the likes of Illinois, Ohio State and Michigan, he will prep for games against Lehigh, Bucknell and Colgate. The conference headquarters are based in nearby Center Valley. Speculation around DeChellis says that there was quite a bit of pressure to build and maintain a "tournament type team." This coming season that would have been difficult with the graduation of the schools all-time leading scorer Talor Battle and Jeff Brooks who averaged 13 points per game. Last season Penn State finished 9-9 in the Big Ten, 19-15 overall. Given the timing of his departure, Penn State will be hard pressed to find a "big name coach" interested in this job.
