NCAA Comes Down Hard On Penn State And Football Program

The NCAA revealed the punishment that the Penn State community dreaded to hear.  NCAA President Mark Emmert said Monday that their decision was based on the hope that Penn State would establish an athletic culture  "in which football will  never again be placed ahead of educating, nurturing and protecting  young people." Among the penalties, the NCAA fined the University $60 million dollars, the equvilant of one year gross revenue of the football program and banned them from appearing in Bowl Games for four years while limiting their scholarships from 25 to 15. Perhaps most surprsingly, the University must also vacate all wins from 1998 to 2011, more than 100 wins. This now means that former head coach Joe Paterno, a central figure in the Jerry Sandusky child sex scandel, is no longer the winningest coach in college football history.  Also, because none of the student-athletes were involved in the scandel, the NCAA attempted to miniumize the mpact on them by allowing any student-athlete to transfer without having to sit out a year before playing at their new school.
