Lansdale Loses In Perky League Play

An upset took place in the Perky League Thursday night; as the Lansdale Tigers blew a 7-2 lead, losing 8 to 7 to the Pottstown Spartans.

The Tigers got off to a great start led mainly by their top three hitters in the batting order, Leon Simpson, Rocky Ferrier, and Jason Mills in that order. Each player had two hits, and two RBI’s, with Ferrier and Simpson scoring two runs each. Coach Kevin McCann said afterwards, “That’s what we expect out of the top of the order. Rocky Ferrier has been hurt, this is the first time he’s been at the top of the order and he really came through which is great to see because he has been struggling since coming back. If he can get going it’s really going to be a huge thing for our team”. The offensive explosion in the early innings sent Spartans pitcher Alex Kobylinski to the showers in the middle of the 3rd innings after giving up seven runs on eleven hits.

The momentum shifted in the 4th inning when Tigers 3rd basemen, Jordan Premick blew out his hamstring running a groundball out. Players had to move around and play out of position and at about the same time the Spartans bats started to warm up. The Spartans middle of the order really produced and had some timely hits which knocked Tigers pitcher Kevin Christy out of the game. He went 5 innings, giving up six runs on 7 hits. The main offensive contributor for Pottstown was Matt Bruno who went 3-4 with 4 runs batted in. Tom DeAngelis and Tyler Russ came through with two hits, an RBI, and a run scored a piece. The Tiger’s bats went silent during Pottstown’s hitting barrage, as Mike Haslam replaced Alex Kobylinski on the mound for Pottstown who had Lansdale looking foolish at the plate, as he tossed 2 and 2/3 scoreless innings.

Even with this huge comeback from Pottstown, they were still down 7-6 going into the bottom of the 7th inning, which is the last inning in Perky league baseball. Alex Gelegotie came in for the close for the Tigers, but things did not go as he scripted. Tom DeAngelis led off the 7th with a bloop single over shortstop, followed by another cheap hit by Tyler Mikell, who has been Pottstown most consistent hitter all season. Gelegotie got an out off of a sacrifice bunt, but runners were on 2nd and 3rd with only 1 man down. Josh Martin was the next hitter for Pottstown, and he came through with a sac fly to tie the game. With the Spartans bench going wild, the game ended with the next swing by Matt Bruno, as he lined a single to right field scoring Tyler Mikell to complete the comeback, knocking off the Lansdale Tigers in heroic fashion.

The heartbreaking loss drops Lansdale to 9-3-2, still in good position for a playoff berth as they lead the league in wins still. Pottstown Spartans improve to 5-8 and will need a little help to get into the playoffs. Lansdale is back at it today against the Skippack Wranglers, who sit at 7-3-2 on the season. Pottstown will play again today as well against the King of Prussia Cannons who are 5-7-1.  For more Perky league baseball information be sure to check out their website:
