Univest Bike Race Getting New Route

bikeThe Univest Grand Prix bicycle race is being re-routed this year. Instead of looping through the North Penn area and into Upper Montgomery County, promoter John Eustice says it will stay in a smaller area.

“We have changed the race course so that it’s Souderton, Telford and Franconia.  We’ve got this circuit design that’s almost a figure eight, so at the start-finish line you’ll see them twice a lap.”

He says the route has not yet been finalized, but the 60-mile course they used for the last twelve races covered too much ground.

“This area is becoming more and more congested, so to secure 60 miles of open road in what is basically suburban Philadelphia now is extraordinarily difficult, so I thought we’ve been doing it for 13 years and we’ve never had an incident, so let’s stop while we’re ahead.”

Eustice says the re-routed Univest Grand Prix will have the same feeling of going through neighborhoods that the Doylestown and Philadelphia races have, and it will have the best field of riders ever.  He says it will be less European in style and more spectator-friendly, and he believes it will become the prototype for American races.
