It looks like the landmark Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope has a new life. The nonprofit Bridge Street Foundation, Broadway Producer Jed Bernstein and Bucks County Playhouse Conservancy Founder Peggy McRae have bought it through a joint effort for an undisclosed amount of cash. The playhouse, which opened in 1939 in an old grist mill, closed at the end of the Christmas season last year. The new owners hope to re-open in time for the summer season next year. The building needs more than $1 million worth of improvements, including a sprinkler and fire-detection system, to bring it into compliance with current codes. When that work will be done is not clear.
