PCEF (Pennridge Community Education Foundation) was founded in 2008 as a way to raise funds to enhance educational opportunities for Pennridge students. Most other school districts in the area have had educational foundations for many years. Pennridge School Board asked Joe Ferry to look into starting one, and three years later, they’re a viable fundraising organization.

The First year, they teamed with the American Management Association to offer a day-long workshop for members of our senior class. They brought in national speakers on topics such as stress management, networking, interviewing skills and other areas of interest to seniors. Very successful day.

Since then, they have awarded mini-grants to teachers and supported groups such as the Odyssey of the Mind team that went to World Finals last year. With help from First Savings Bank, they’re supporting a microloan project in our middle schools. Students get small loans to start a business, then return the funds to the program and donate the profits to a worthy organization.

Most successful microloan project has been a book of stories written by girls in Rwanda who are orphans of AIDS. Two girls started the project as seventh graders at Penn Central and have so far raised thousands of dollars toward construction of a dormitory at a school.

During the week of 3-21-2011, PCEF rescued the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee, which was in danger of not being held for the second year in a row. They didn’t want kids to miss out on this time-honored tradition. 33 students from schools around Bucks and Montgomery counties competed for the opportunity to go to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in June. An eighth grader from Tohickon Middle School in the Central Bucks School District won.

PCEF's funds come from a variety of sources, mostly from a Casino night sponsored by the Pennridge-Perkasie Rotary Club. they’ve also received support from the Pennridge Education Association and through or teacher tributes campaigns.

“A Lovely Evening” is their most ambitious project to date. They’ve rented the Sellersville Theater on Tuesday April 12 and will award our first-ever “Friend of Education award to three recipients chosen through a nomination and review process. They are:

  • Dr. Thomas Rutter, prinicipal at Pennridge Central Middle Scholl.
  • Mr. Randy Swope, a business teacher at Pennridge High School.
  • Mr. Wayne Helman, longtime teacher, football and track coach, and athletic director who passed away last fall.
