Park Service Wants Company To Lease Knox House

The National Park service is looking for a private company to lease the Philander Chase Knox House and its grounds.

It’s located on Library Lane near Yellow Springs Road in the southwest corner of Valley Forge National Historical Park.

The oldest part of the main house dates back to the late 1700’s, and it was expanded several times up into the early 20th Century.  At one time it was the summer home of Philander Chase Knox, a former U.S. senator, attorney general and secretary of state.

He served in the cabinets of Presidents McKinley, Taft and Theodore Roosevelt, and is probably best known for his comment to Roosevelt about the Panama Canal.  He Said, “Do not let so great an achievement suffer from any taint of legality.”

Most of the house is empty, but part of it contains the park library, which is open to the public by appointment.  The tenant would be required to maintain and preserve the house according to government standards for historic preservation, and it could be rented out for parties, weddings and corporate retreats.
