The nearly year long legal battle over same sex marriage in Montgomery county has come to an end. Montgomery County spokesperson, Frank Custer says, the long legal struggle came to an end late Tuesday afternoon.
Custer says, the health department wrote a letter to the State Supreme Court saying they wouldn’t have a problem with ending the stay on same sex marriages. The United States Supreme Court ruled the ban on same sex marriage unconstitutional.
“The State Supreme Court, for whatever reason took issue its rulings. So as of 4:15 or 4:30 Tuesday afternoon the stay was lifted and if anyone wants to get a same sex marriage license, our Register of Wills, D. Bruce Hanes is ready to issue licenses.”
Register of wills D. Bruce Hanes began issuing same sex marriage licenses last summer, which kicked off a legal tug of war between the Governor and the county.
