Property Tax Hike in Upper Gwynedd

The Upper Gwynedd Commissioners have approved a budget for next year that more than doubles property taxes.   That's an increase of about $140 for the average taxpayer.   The budget also includes a 15% increase in sewer rates.   That translates into almost $50 for the average consumer.   The budget also continues the homestead exemption allowing qualified homeowners to shield $30,000 of the assessed value of their home from taxation.

Buddies Behind Bars

Two friends who went on a robbery spree in Bucks and Montgomery Counties are now bunking at a state prison.   Law enforcement officials say 39-year-old Phil Prokop of North Wales and 23-year-old Ryan Wiley of Doylestown stole more than one-and-a-half million dollars worth of loot during burglaries at homes and businesses.   Wiley will spend at least five years behind bars while Prokop drew a sentence of no less than three years in jail.

Former Montco GOP Chairman To Stand Trial

The former chairman of the Republican Party in Montgomery County will be tried on rape charges.   66-year-old Robert Kerns was in court yesterday and stared straight ahead as the victim took the stand for almost 45-minutes describing how Kerns allegedly sexually assaulted her.   His attorney had nothing to say after the preliminary hearing other than not guilty.   Kerns will be in Montgomery County court next month for a formal arraignment on rape charges.

Montco Approves 2014 Budget

Montgomery County officials have approved a budget for next year.   The spending plan totals almost 600-million dollars across all funds and does not call for a property tax increase.   It does include a 1.5% pay raise for all county employees not covered by a union contract.   County officials also say they will not need to take out a tax revenue anticipation note to meet payroll during the first part of 2014.
